The Antiques That Shaped Me
Homes & Antiques
My aunt Jane and her husband travelled extensively and lived abroad before returning to London. When they began shipping their possessions back home, they realised their house wasn’t big enough for all their pieces, so my dad, her brother, took in deliveries.

Chic, glamorous and comfort-able are three words that sum up Olivia Outred’s refreshing interiors. Her small studio of four is working on a variety of projects, including the renova-tion of a house in east London, and a Cornish newbuild with traditional interiors. A furniture collection is also in the offing, due to launch later this year.

I love Fine cell Work. Their range of beautifully made cushions are always covetable, and I have just discovered this one which I particularly like, because you can customise it, and add the name of someone you love.

Olivia Outred is a self-confessed colour enthusiast and lover of great furniture, both of which are prevalent in all of her projects. The result are homes that come to life with character, where each piece is worthy of conversation and each room feels harmoniously coordinated combining pieces from the past with a contemporary sense of playfulness.

"Founding my studio happened very organically. Before I had a business card or even a professional email address, I found myself working with some great clients on very exciting projects. Nine years later, I run a team of 5 from our studio in East London."

This is my go-to guide on how to get it right. David is the master of decorating houses of grand scale and creating serene interiors. When I start a project, there’s a moment of terror mixed with excitement, so often I flip open this well-worn book to remind myself to make sure all the proportions work – especially the chimneypieces and panelling.

Olivia was brought up in a creative family in Norfolk. ‘My mother made everything from bread to curtains. She painted furniture; my parents built our catamaran; we kept hens,’ she says. From the age of 18 to 21, she worked to save for university fees: the degree in interior and spatial design at Chelsea College of Arts made it worthwhile.

Hung with pieces by Damien Hirst, Mark Wallinger et al, these Mayfair offices could easily be mistaken for a private home. Here staff get to share watercolour rather than water-cooler moments, thanks to their philanthropic boss, an assiduous col- lector who has a keen eye for striking paintings and furniture – and likes to put her art into her work.
